“Your story could be the key that unlocks someone else’s prison. Don’t be afraid to share it!”

What is an Unwanted Vacation? We all want to be on vacation, we all look forward to going on vacation. Vacations temporarily free us from life’s everyday burdens, how can there be an unwanted vacation, everyone yearns for more time off.

There are currently over 2 million men, women, and youth incarcerated across America today; these citizens are on an unwanted vacation. They are away from their families, children, friends, jobs, homes, and communities, but not by choice. They may be free from everyday struggles of life; no children to tend to, families to care for, no rent to pay, free from a job’s daily grind, free from traffic, free from chores and errands. They may not have to worry about where they will lay their head at night, or when they will get their next meal, but it comes at a large cost. The cost of their freedom, the cost of their families and friends, their homes, their jobs.

Welcome to the Unwanted Vacation, we hope you join us on the journey to help millions of Americans who have been affected by incarceration in one form or another, and to raise awareness to create change.

Who are we and why do we do what we do? We are a small non-profit organization based out of San Diego, CA called New Chances. We serve our local communities youth, women, and their children who have been affected by incarceration; providing services before, during, and after incarceration. Our team is passionate about building better and brighter futures, breaking the cycle of incarceration and supporting self sufficiency for long term success. Every American deserves the chance to work. Creating Opportunities for a New Chance on Life.

“We don’t see things as they are. We see things as we are.”

Everyone has beliefs about various social and identity groups, and this stems from as humans our natural tendency to organize social worlds by categorizing them. Most of the time we are unaware of the categories or social stereotypes we place certain groups of people in. One of these large groups are Americans across our country with a criminal record.

America is a country founded on the idea of new chances and new beginnings, yet we continue to close the door that leads to a better life for many Americans. We turn our backs on an entire section of our population.  People with criminal convictions are left out of the job market, blocked from specific jobs, and stereotyped as unhireable.

There are preconceived conclusions and judgement against those with a past criminal history, Those with a criminal past are automatically dismissed and assumed to be a “bad” person or “poor” worker, but this is not always the case. Many ex-offenders want a chance to do things right and will work even harder to prove it. There are many smart and talented people who made mistakes, and learned from them; nobody is perfect and everyone deserves a second chance. Just because you don’t have a criminal record does not make you a great employee and just because you have a criminal record does not make you a bad employee.

We all need to take the time and effort to help our communities and make a difference in someone’s life, and all it takes is giving someone a chance. At Dave’s Killer Bread 30-40% of the workforce had a felony conviction, and the opportunity that Dave’s Killer Bread gave these individuals was a leading factor to their success and change in their lives. Organizations across the US needs to do a better job offering opportunities to those with a criminal background.

Share your thoughts, Do you believe we should give those with a criminal past a second chance?

We are New Chances, a little about us:

New Chances is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization that transforms the lives of women and children affected by incarceration. At New Chances our team works hard and strives to help change lives one comeback at a time! Our goal is to help break the cycle of incarceration in our local communities. We want to use our blog the Unwanted Vacation to change the perception of Americans with criminal records, to educate our communities on the resources available through New Chances, and to get the assistance of the public and ex-offenders on how we can do things better. We want opinions, new ideas, suggestions, and strategies on how to create better re-entry programs and putting an end to the vicious cycle of mass incarceration. We hope you follow us and be a part of the change.
